Spaceship Earth, EPCOT - Austin Heyne

As part of their attractions, theme parks and in particular Walt Disney’s Epcot is home to some fascinating and impressive structures. Though a lot of the structures at parks are facades, the large geodesic sphere known as Spaceship Earth is in fact a complete structure with an internal attractions and a ride. The sphere is used as the symbol for Epcot and in my opinion rightfully so. I find the effect of the repeating geometric structure very interesting. As with any repeating pattern you tend to see ‘sub patterns’ in the gaps between the shapes, while interesting in their own right, as you walk around the sphere these change giving an element of movement to the structure. At night, when illuminated, light is reflected on all the different angles making it both attractive and fun to watch.
