Kiyomizudera--Devon Triebold

Kiyomizudera is a temple near Gion in Kyoto, Japan. This temple is a UNESCO world heritage site and a huge tourist destination in Kyoto. I visited here when I studied abroad in Kyoto last year, and it was an amazing experience.

This temple was founded in 798, but because it has burned down a number of times, most of the buildings that people can see now are from the 1600's. The most famous area one can see is probably the Stage, which is the part that juts out off the mountain shown here. There is a legend that jumping off the stage and surviving will grant you one wish, and there have been records of 234 people jumping off this stage.

The architecture of this temple is amazing. I went there with one of my Japanese friends, and each of the different areas in this complex have traditions associated with experiencing them. The entire complex is beautiful and culturally rich. Lastly, there was not one single nail used in the construction of the main temple, which made it even more impressive.
