Kansas City Central Library - Steve Kennedy

These 25-foot-high representations of 22 different books, set between glass-enclosed stairwells and made to look like bookends, are known as the Community Bookshelf lining one wall of the Central Library's parking garage in downtown Kansas City.

The book spines, which measure approximately 25 feet by 9 feet are made of signboard mylar. The shelf showcases 22 titles reflecting a wide variety of reading interests as poled and suggested by Kansas City readers. The titles used for construction where then selected by The Kansas City Public Library Board of Trustees.

This is yet another wonderful architectural gem of Kansas City.

You asked at the beginning of this course if we think architects are needed in society.  Absolutely!  Without Architects and Engineers, and Designers, functions of society may not even be able to take place.  And if they still could, cities might look like shanty towns of the old west - function without form.
