Daibutsuden, Nara--Devon Triebold

This is the Daibutsuden (Great Budda Temple), one of the buildings in a temple complex called Todaiji in Nara, Japan. This was one of the sites I visited when I studied abroad last year. This temple was one of many that we saw that day, but it was easily the most memorable. Just inside this building is one of the biggest Buddha in the world, Daibutsu. As you walk up to the building and get closer to the entrance, you can start to see parts of the Buddha looming up in the back of the temple, but you won't able to see the entire statue until you enter the building. The statue itself is almost 50 feet tall and bronze. I'm not Buddhist, but that statue was amazing. Not only the craftsmanship of the statue itself, but also the way it was framed, did a fantastic job of inspiring awe. It also completely confuses your sense of scale; after looking at the Buddha and a few other huge statues within this building, normal-sized statues seem absolutely tiny.
