Main street bridge, Norman, Ok.
This new bridge features an interchange design known as a
single point urban interchange (SPUI). An SPUI uses only one set of traffic
lights and is safer and more efficient than a traditional intersection. Credit for
this design is given to the late Wallace Hawkes who created the first version in 1974.
Not only is the new overpass technologically superior it is
more visually appealing as well and a traveler on 1-35 will notice the
depiction of the land run on the walls as well as other artistic elements of
the bridge.
