The PPG (Pittsburgh Plate Glass) Building is iconic to the Pittsburgh
skyline. Pittsburgh’s biggest economic boom came from its glass and steel
industry and this building is the culmination of that spirit. It was designed
by Philip Johnson and erected in the early eighties. Since then, it has become
nearly synonymous with the architecture of Philip Johnson. For people native to
the area, the PPG Building has a mixed reputation: either it is seen as a
cultural landmark with an innovative design or a large downtown eyesore.
Personally, I tend towards the latter opinion but there is no denying its
influence on the city.
