Devon Triebold, Somerset High School
A building that has had a significant impact on my life is Somerset High School in Somerset, Wisconsin. Although high school wasn't a particularly bad time in my life, I hated this building with a passion. There were three main reasons for this.
Firstly, the color scheme was the opposite of inspiring: light green and sickly pink in most places, including the multipurpose room seen below (which was used as an assembly room, cafeteria, theatre, and local church.)
Another reason was that the building was not planned well. When the school was built, whoever planned it thought it would be a good idea to have completely flat ceilings. This was impractical in Wisconsin during the winter time, when snow would pile up and sometimes soak through the ceiling. Every year, we would have to deal with wrecked tiles, some which would fall on the floor, and puddles in the halls and in classrooms.
Lastly, see the rusting sculpture in the first picture. This statue was intentionally made so it could rust, and it was mostly made by students, but the statue struck a lot of us as obnoxious.
I still managed to do well in high school, but this building did nothing to encourage students to want to go to school and learn. In that sense, this building failed miserably in its purpose.
