Devon Triebold, Jurack 3 Expo House

A building that has influenced me in a very positive way was a house called Jurack 3 in Kyoto, Japan. This house is ran by a man named Yuusuke and rented out to students and young adults, especially foreigners studying in Kyoto. Yuusuke owns several of these types of houses and holds events to try to build community within his properties. My friend Ruilin lived in the house shown here.

I studied abroad in Kyoto last spring, and the house I lived in was fairly gloomy and unwelcoming. Partially because of that house, I formed a somewhat bad first impression of life in Kyoto. However, one day, Ruilin invited us all over. The house she was living in was the complete opposite of the apartment I was living in; the vibe was immediately welcoming, there were slippers in the door and cushions to sit on, and the people living there seemed to gravitate to the living room to socialize and chat with each other. When we visited, we actually met Yuusuke, who proceeded to invite us to all of the future events that his community was putting on (including hiking, watching soccer, making curry, etc.)

I chose this house because that house had a very welcoming and warm vibe to it. Going to that house made me feel at home while I was abroad, which is why I chose it.
