In 2012 I took my military R&R leave across Europe and the building that stuck with me the most was a hole in the wall pub in Wurzburg, Germany. Before traveling to this particular establishment I had never been to a traditional pub and bars in the U.S. have never been able to live up to it. While the building is still part of a larger structure, the design of the pub helps highlight the historic elements of the building. The inside of the pub has very warm feel and doesn't look commercialized at all. This type of social building's atmosphere goes far beyond monetary cost. These type of structures feel much more like a piece of culture than any strip mall ever could. Hopefully the United States can start building structures that have timeliness and culture behind them.
